Six Months on Substack - Here are the stats, facts and figures
A revenue stream without endless one-on-one sessions. Intrigued? We take to behind the scenes
Six months on Substack. Wow, that has certainly flown! Do we still love
and absolutelyHave we hit our goals?! Full disclaimer - #NOPE . However, we promised you a six-month check-in, warts and all, so here it is.
It’s been really frustrating, especially as we knew this post was looming suddenly all over the internet is #bigwin shares and declarations of success beyond wildest dreams. Is it just us noticing that everywhere and while we do love to celebrate with others, let’s get some balance?
Here is our balance post for you #Goalsnotmet
A few reasons why
The biggest slice of our attention pie has been going towards a book project, ‘The Therapists Guide to Private Practice, Building a Values-Based Business’ out next year with Routledge; it’s super exciting and super time-consuming, we're about to hand it over to our publisher in two weeks time. That's been a massive chunk of our focus.
Looking back, we've realised maybe we weren't directing traffic to our Substack in the most effective way. Sarah has still been putting effort into Instagram, which actually brings minimal traffic and looking at the stats, it's like a lightbulb moment about where we really need to channel our efforts simply on Substack. What a relief!
We need to keep the focus on creating high-quality content and work more on engagement and collaborations, which we read all the time from
and was a key part of what Sarah learned in the which was a class dedicated to understanding Substack and we are excited to implement everything we have learned. The are also both very focused in on Substack while we might need to cut the apron strings of other platforms more. Heres how people find us
How Subscribers Find Us
You’ll notice that Therapists Corner is most often found by people directly or through Google, which is exciting because it means that the SEO of our Substack is increasing.
We do have a Facebook ad running at the moment, so this will be messing with the substack results table because, without this, Facebook wouldn’t be driving traffic to our substack.
Sarah has recently put a signup box on every blog post on her website. Here is an example Blog and this is driving traffic to
some of the blog posts have good SEO and organically generate traffic. The Substack app is also working really well.Sarah has also put an advert on her podcast Ask the Therapist; this will be driving traffic as listeners are growing all the time.
I think our Therapist Corner podcast on Substack is driving lots of traffic too; just look at this growth since the start.
The Initial Buzz
Initially, we didn’t how this new platform would play out. There was a big buzz at first, which naturally simmered down over time. We kicked things off with a cool 2K subscribers from an old email list, but then, whoosh, 300 dipped out.
It makes sense, though, right? We've shifted gears, moved to a different platform, and we're doing things completely differently now. It's been a huge shake-up, and we're all finding our feet. Some long-timers said, 'nope, not for us' and left while new faces are checking us out. Some stick around, some don't. It's been a whole lot of adjusting for all of us. While we used to email our list just once a week, people are now getting a few more emails, which means that if it’s not of interest, people are unsubscribing but on the flip side, the most interested are staying around.
This is how it started.
Therapists:The Profit Potential of Substack: Sharing Our Journey from Nothing to Profit in 3 Months
The ultimate goal is to get
steady and organised by the time our book launches next year. So, while we're a bit fed up about not hitting all our goals yet, we're learning heaps, and every step is getting us closer to where we want to be.We can actually see that in the near future, our work on Substack will be paying us to spend more time at home doing what we love doing: writing, creating and helping therapists create amazing businesses. It feels very achievable and this is something we now know for sure, at the start we had no idea how it would play out.
